Twenty-two were in attendance to vote on sponsoring a trophy package for the 2010 IPMS USA National Convention. Glen Martin, active IPMS Region 2 Coordinator, announced he would be resigning effective at the conclusion of the 2010 Region 2 Convention. Glen's put in many long hours serving our R2 chapters while still somehow finding time to write articles, perform demonstrations and finish models on his workbench. Glen, we thank you for your role as R2 Coordinator! Glen also announced the winners of the R2 annual awards. Chapter of the year went to IPMS Northern VA Modelers. The Newsletter of the year was IPMS New Jersey's "Mosquitogram", and the Webmaster was your's truly, John Robinson. Tonight's centered around another successful Old Dominion Open. Our attendance was about equal as last year, despite bad weather North of Virginia. Our next contest will be hosting the IPMS Region II Convention in Fredericksburg, VA on October 15-16. Find out more on our convention website. The First Quarter contest was held with the special theme of Science Fiction. Glen Martin won the honors with his Nosferatu figure. Something about those eyes... This last meeting before the 2010 Old Dominion Open was used to firm up final details and canvass the membership for volunteers. July 2009 Meeting:

July

The big news at this meeting was the announcement that IPMS Richmond had won the Virginia Shootout that was held in Roanoke recently. This was a friendly idea that started twelve years ago to encourage the Virginia IPMS chapters to come out to each other's shows. Points are awarded based on number of contestants with bonuses for placing in the winner's circle at the end of the show. It was our first win, and we won it big, leaving the others in the dust. We have possession of the plaque, which is engraved with all the previous winning chapters. We'll hang onto it for a year until the next Shootout in 2010. Congratulations to all who participated and enjoyed the show! View the display models that night at this Gallery page.

This is an email update I pass along to all the Chapter Presidents to then pass out to the membership. If I have news I'll get it posted. If anyone has anything for the next update, please let me know via I am asking all Chapter Presidents and contacts to get this web page address to your members so everyone is informed and knows where to send their questions or news. Many thanks go out to my home club IPMS Richmond for providing web page space for our Region. Thanks to all the clubs, members, and especially the volunteers. You folks are what makes us such a great bunch of "glue sniffers". Region 2 is a shining example of exceptional model builders that are truly family.

Sincerely,
Glen Martin
IPMS Region 2 Coordinator

March 2010 Update:

IPMS Sanctioned Shows in Region 2:

MOSQUITOCON: April 3rd

Hosted by IPMS New Jersey. The theme for this year's show is: "1940-England Stands Alone." I'm sure most of you would enjoy taking home that theme award. I know they have done something special for that award, trust me. If you miss this, you've missed out and need to have a boot planted in your backside. If you have questions, contact the guys and give Big Bill a shout and let the boys know you are coming to the show! Forms for registration, trophy sponsorships, etc. can be found on their website in PDF forms. I hope to be there in person as well. Come on out and attend the show.

Visit the chapter website for details.

Northern Virginia Model Classic: May 22nd

Hosted by IPMS NoVA. Got a Dracula figure in your closet amongst other things? Well, we all have something in the closet so we won't dwell on that. But this year's theme is "Heroes and Villains". The guys at NOVA are gearing up once again to put on a spectacular show. The "Model Palooza" last year was a new twist in this chapter's show which has a long standing tradition of throwing in something new each year. Of particular interest was the Roman Centurions walking around in full blown authentic costumes! And, on top of that, the vendor situation was one that of course, drained my wallet. Yes, sadly to say, I had to use the credit card for dinner after the show as I had no more $$$ to spend! These guys are throwing this show this year to honor a hero or a villain. I happen to know that Monarch Models has re-introduced some classic villain figures in just the past several months. Whether or not you have NOSFERATU or IRON MAN, you've got roughly two months to get ready for this one so get to building! I'll be there as well, although not much of an attraction.

Visit the chapter website for details.

Virginia Shootout: August 14th

Hosted by IPMS Roanoke. The Shootout last year was won by IPMS Richmond which was a first in a very long time. That honor is normally held by IPMS Roanoke, Lynchburg or Tidewater and has been a long-time rivalry between the clubs. That honor is awarded to the best overall chapter performance by the respective chapter member's entries at the show. Points are awarded for total entries and placement points for models that finish in the 1-2-3 positions. If a modeler takes home a special honor, say a "best of", theme or special award, those points are cumulative to the overall chapter score and figure heavily in the point totals. The award really is in the meaning of "teamwork". IPMS Richmond last year had about 13 to 15 guys that traveled to the show and cleaned out their available model display cases for entry into the show. In the end, Richmond had the most points. Now, to quote Admiral Yamamoto during WWII after learning of the defeat handed out by his forces on Pearl Harbor, "I feel all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve". Richmond will have to go to extremes this time around as I know the other chapters are gunning for us. Keep an eye open for more information concerning this show. Again, there will be a "Glen" sighting at this show...come on out and meet bobo the clown...

Visit the chapter website for details.

PennCON: September 18th

Hosted by IPMS Central Pennsylvania. Frank Froment was telling me about the contest while attending the IPMS Richmond Old Dominion Open a few weeks ago. They are planning this show to be bigger and better. These guys have a great small town show feeling and the quality is there. I really hope you will add this to your schedule because this will be the last show before the big one. IPMS Central Penn needs your support.

Visit the chapter website for details.

Region Two Convention: Oct 15-16

Hosted by IPMS Richmond, VA. OK, here it is. The theme is "Nostalgic Plastic"-any kit made before 1980. Sounds like a hard contest theme award? heee heee....it will be. In stepping back into time when IPMS Richmond last hosted a Regional show in the 1980's, we decided to move back in time and play to our past, bringing back the old time feel for this show. Most of you that were at the IPMS Richmond Old Dominion Open a few weeks ago know about our awards which we spent a lot of money making them acrylic, following IPMS New Jersey's lead at the 2009 Regional. We had recently been giving out medallions but decided that we'd spend the money and push out acrylic awards. As a reward for this, we had our best Old Dominion Open show ever with 634 models entered with just under 150 vendor tables! These were records for our show. We have momentum and the vendors are clamoring right now to get reservations for table space at our show. I can tell you that we are having a first ever "Bring and Build" night at the hotel in one of the conference rooms. This should be a blast. I intend to take plenty of pictures for a write-up to be submitted to the IPMS Journal for publication which I hope will be in a future edition. Come on out and spend the night!

Visit the IPMS Region 2 Convention website.

Information about the show is readily available on the convention website. You can pull down forms and information as needed to register for the show and for hotel rooms.

IPMS Sanctioned Shows outside of Region 2:

Down East Con-July 10th

Hosted by IPMS East Carolina Plastic Modelers. THEY ARE BACK! After taking a short hiatus, these guys are back and boy are they ever! They are going to have their theme "Carolina On My Mind" once again, honoring the best entry that ties back to the state of North Carolina. I realize this might not be a show that the Central and Northern regions of Region 2 would be interested in but for those of us in Virginia, this is a close show and ready to rock! Please step in there and show support for this show. I know they have increased their armor categories to pave the way for the influx of 1/72 and 1/48 scale armor. Come on out to this one, it will be a fun time!

Visit the chapter website for details.

IPMSUSA National Convention-August 4-7

Hosted by IPMS Phoenix, AZ. This show will be a long haul for most so I won't go into the particulars other than to ask you to please, please step up and support that show financially. The monies collected go to supporting the show directly and IPMS as a society. It's our signature event.

Visit the website for details.

NOREASTCON-Region 1 Convention-April 30th-May 1st

Hosted by Long Island Scale Model Society. This is a red alert for the central and northern portion of Region 2. This show will be the signature event for Region 1 this year and is easily accessible to those in the Central and Northern portion of Region 2. It will be well worth the drive North! You guys need to keep this show on your radar. They need sponsors as well! The theme for this show is: Multiple themes! Get this...no less than six special themes!

Visit the chapter website for details.

Non IPMS Sanctioned Shows:

AMPS International Convention-April 22-24th

The AMPS (Armor Modelers Preservation Society) is hosting their national convention in Auburn, IN at the WW2 Victory Museum. If you are an armor builder and want to attend a National show of nothing but cold steel, nuts and bolts, main gun in your face armor then this is THE PLACE to be! The site of this show is the WW2 Victory Museum which has one of the largest public collections of armored fighting vehicles in the Central United States. The vendors are all about armor! If you have never been to this show, it's well worth the drive.

Founding member of IPMS Tidewater, VA Dies

All, it's with sad news that I have to report that IPMS Tidewater lost one of their founding members--Colonel Cole, IPMS #20--this past week. Bill Brickhouse notified me of this situation. Please remember this gentleman and the IPMS Tidewater club in your thoughts and prayers. It's always sad to lose a founding member like Mr. Cole. Any condolences may be sent to .

Stepping down as the Region Two Coordinator

Ok, you heard it from me first. Yes, it's true. I have turned in my resignation effective at the conclusion of the Region Two Contest on October 16th. The main reason for doing so is increased issues with an irregular heartbeat that is requiring me to give up a lot of activities. It's time to be in the shadows moving forward.

The search for my replacement will start soon. Please consider stepping up and doing this job for IPMS Region 2. You may contact , IPMSUSA Director of Local Chapters to make it known you would like to be considered for this position. It was and is an honor to do this role. Knowledge of how to communicate (always helpful) and scheduling are keys to this job, along with an ear for listening to gripes, problems and suggestions. I won't kid you in telling you that the job is not always about having fun times. It can be demanding at times. But, if you love the hobby, love interacting with people, this is a great way to promote the hobby through your friendships with people. And, you get to work with all the other Regional Coordinators as well. If I can do it, anyone can! It has been an honor to do this over the past 4 years. I want to thank you for your support and hope that you will keep in touch with me after I step down. The hope is that a successor can be found in the next 3 months and then I can work with this person from July until the Regional to bring them up to speed on chapter re-chartering efforts and the communications that starts on October 1st.

That's it, build models, have fun...
